Qantas Strikes: 10,000 Passengers to be Hit

The goings are getting tougher for Qantas Airways!

Australia’s flag carrier is forced to cancel as many as 70 flights as the airline’s ground staff go off work at different airports all over the country.

Flight cancellations are going to impact 10,000 passengers on Friday, as per Qantas Airways. Past few months have been tumultuous for the airline with some 70,000 passengers getting hit with a string of strikes that erupted in the period. Budget travellers who make advance bookings to net cheap flight tickets are the unhappiest lot as Qantas is not exactly known to roll out cheap flight tickets pretty often!

In the past few months, Qantas Airways has been struggling to keep different unions happy. Unions representing aircraft pilots, mechanics, baggage handlers and caterers have cast apprehensions regarding the airline’s plans to move jobs offshore. Better pay and work conditions are some issues raised by the unions. If one takes into account different strikes that have jolted the airline in past few months, then it is estimated that some 70,000 passengers have been affected by the flight delays and cancellations.

Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce has urged the unions to be “more realistic” while putting their demands. He insisted the unions to think of the jobs they're endangering around the country. Alan Joyce also apologised to the travellers who have been impacted by the series of strikes.

Qantas is said to have lost A$68 million so far, with additional loss of A$15 million per week in revenues.

Air Canada Flight Attendants Reject Deal, Issue Strike Notice

Travellers with bookings on Air Canada flights need to brace themselves! With airline’s flight attendants rebuffing the tentative agreement and issuing a strike notice, things are not looking too rosy either for the travellers or for the Canada’s flag carrier.

On Sunday, the Canadian Union of Public Employees (the union that represents 6,800 Air Canada flight attendants) issued the strike notice to the airline. The union took the decision after 65% of the union members voted against the new labour agreement of last month. If no new agreement is reached very soon, the flight attendants of the popular airline would go on a strike at 12:01 a.m., Thursday.

Air Canada is one of the biggest airlines in the world. Any sort of disturbance in the working of the airline is sure to affect thousands of travellers. Travellers make their reservations with Air Canada much in advance to net cheap flight ticket but in an event of a strike those cheap flight tickets won’t assist passengers in reducing flight delays.

Flight attendants reached a tentative agreement with the airline last month. The agreement included wage raise of 2% in the first three years, and 3% in the third. It also included steps to move new hires into a hybrid pension scheme. However, it apparently was not enough to keep flight attendants happy.

Air Canada seems to be really struggling when it comes to its labour relations. Few months ago the airline faced a three-day strike by the carrier’s sales and service agents.

Last week, the security screeners at Toronto's Pearson International Airport conducted work-to-rule protest that affected the holiday travel for many.
